The Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History Munich – Berlin (IfZ) is one of the largest non-university historical research institutes in Germany. Its range of work encompasses German and European history in the twentieth century to the present day in its global context. Main research foci are dictatorships in the twentieth century, the history of democracy, and transformations in contemporary history since the 1970s. At its three branches – in Munich, at the Berlin branch and in the IfZ department of the German Foreign Office – the Institute intensively addresses the history and impact of the Cold War.
At its Munich central office, the IfZ unfolds activities for research into the Cold War, which are closely related to corresponding studies pursued by the two Berlin branches. The monographic studies resulting from the interdepartmental project 'The CSCE Process: Multilateral Conference Diplomacy and its Results, 1975 – 1989/90' are now close to completion. Recently, a project on the West German policy of détente during the "Second Cold War" (1979-1983) has been completed and published. A new project at the Munich central office examines the global refugee regime in the Middle East in the 1970s and 1980s, and in this way integrates the Cold War into global historical issues. Moreover, the IfZ has published volumes on the history of 20th century German-Russian relations as the book series of the "Gemeinsame Kommission für die Erforschung der jüngeren Geschichte der deutsch-russischen Beziehungen" is located at the Munich central office. Further studies are in progress.
